President’s Letter
Dear Member-Owners of Northview Swim Club:
I would like to take a few moments to share some thoughts with you as our swim season winds down. This season has been fun and successful despite some changes that were made due to the current economic climate.
First, I would like to share the goals of the Northview Swim Club Board. The first goal of the board is safety. This safety goal is primarily related to sanitary water. There are very specific federal and state regulations that influence the operations of public and private swimming pools and spas in the USA. Every year there is a Swimming Pool and Spa Conference hosted by Benton Franklin Health Department and every year for the last six years, NVSC has sent a board member representative. At the conference, attendees learn about pool chemistry, pool operations and physical safety of the pool.
The club gets a discount on the operation permit for attendance and we have had very pristine water because of what is learned at the conference. I feel that the board is very successful at promoting and attaining this goal of water cleanliness for the club.
The second goal of the club is to reduce operational risks to the membership who are joint owners of Northview Swim Club. As owners, we share the risks and consequences of any pool operation negligence. The Pool and Spa Conference also addresses federal, state and local Health Department mandates which affect the operation of the pool. Because we are a private, non- profit club, we have certain guidelines to follow which view us differently than a public place and allow us the legal benefits of a private club. By issuing a yearly handbook and posting signage that clearly outlines the operations, rules and regulations of the pool, the membership is informed, and because of that information, liability is reduced.
I really love Northview. I love the clean water, the safe environment, swimming with my neighbors, and the sound of families having fun and participating in a safe and healthy activity in a community setting. My fellow board members and I have tried very hard to please the membership and meet all the requirements of the state and federal government. I think 2012 swim season has proved to be successful in those goals.
I encourage members to volunteer for Northview Board, learn more about pool operations, and help maintain this important neighborhood asset.
Swim ON!
Kellie Jenkins
Northview Swim Club President 2012
Treasurer URGENTLY Needed
The Swim Club is without a treasurer and urgently needs a member to volunteer to take over those duties. Please call the President, Kellie Jenkins at 375-9070 and volunteer for this position.
Pool Board Nominations Being Accepted
Three positions on the pool board need to be filled for the 2013-2014 swim seasons. Each board member serves a two year term. In addition to a treasurer to complete the term of Roger Mann who has resigned, three positions are open. The positions and description of duties as outlined in the 2012 Northview Swim Club Membership Handbook are listed below.
President Elect - The President-elect shall assume the responsibilities of the President in his/her absence or incapacitation and be responsible for pool opening and closing in accordance with the schedule approved by the Board of Directors. The President-elect will assist pool managers to assure appropriate pool maintenance and operation throughout the pool season.
Secretary - The secretary shall be responsible for maintaining the records of the Club; preparing and distributing minutes of meetings of the Board of Directors and of the Membership; maintaining an up to date roster of members; preparing and issuing membership certificates; correspondence of the Club, including preparation and distribution of notices of meetings and the Annual Letter of the President. The Secretary will, at the direction of the Treasurer, collect fees and dues from members and issue pool keys. The Secretary will assist the President with ballot preparation; publish the member’s handbook annually, and circulation of monthly electronic newsletters.
Jr. Pool Manager - The Pool Managers shall be responsible for pool maintenance and operations, and ensuring the safe operation of the pool, including hiring and scheduling of lifeguards, pool assistants, and other operating staff, as authorized by the Board of Directors; ensuring that the pool operations are conducted in full accord with applicable laws and regulations; performance or oversight of the performance of such activities as pool chlorination, maintaining proper pool temperature and water chemistry, and enforcement of pool rules and maintenance of signage and of the parking lot and grounds. Pool Managers will assist the President-elect with pool opening and closing as necessary. Specific duties will be assigned to each manager.
Pool Cleanliness and Sanitary Water Conditions
Several pool members discovered feces in the pool but did not immediately report it. It is very important that if an incident is discovered that all members immediate get out of the water and notify a manager. For your own health and safety and the safety of other members, the pool must be closed and the water shock treated to make it safe for swimming. Should you or a family member vomit or discover feces in the pool water, tell the lifeguard immediately. If a lifeguard is not on duty, contact a pool manager, Dave Holmberg, 460-1760 or Ryan Fox, 375-0117.
Member Feedback
The Pool Board encourages member involvement and feedback about pool rules, policies, and operation. The Pool Board consists of dues paying members who volunteer their time so that you and your family can enjoy the pool. Angry and threatening messages are unwarranted; please keep discourse civil.
End of the Season Hot Dog Roast &
Come join your friends and neighbors at a hot dog roast and potluck Saturday August 25th. The pool board will supply hot dots, buns, condiments, plates and utensils. Bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share. The potluck will run from 1:00-3:00 PM.
