President’s Letter

Dear Member-Owners of Northview Swim Club:

I would like to take a few moments to share some thoughts with you as our swim season winds down. This season has been fun and successful despite some changes that were made due to the current economic climate.

First, I would like to share the goals of the Northview Swim Club Board. The first goal of the board is safety. This safety goal is primarily related to sanitary water. There are very specific federal and state regulations that influence the operations of public and private swimming pools and spas in the USA. Every year there is a Swimming Pool and Spa Conference hosted by Benton Franklin Health Department and every year for the last six years, NVSC has sent a board member representative. At the conference, attendees learn about pool chemistry, pool operations and physical safety of the pool.

The club gets a discount on the operation permit for attendance and we have had very pristine water because of what is learned at the conference. I feel that the board is very successful at promoting and attaining this goal of water cleanliness for the club.

The second goal of the club is to reduce operational risks to the membership who are joint owners of Northview Swim Club. As owners, we share the risks and consequences of any pool operation negligence. The Pool and Spa Conference also addresses federal, state and local Health Department mandates which affect the operation of the pool. Because we are a private, non- profit club, we have certain guidelines to follow which view us differently than a public place and allow us the legal benefits of a private club. By issuing a yearly handbook and posting signage that clearly outlines the operations, rules and regulations of the pool, the membership is informed, and because of that information, liability is reduced.

I really love Northview. I love the clean water, the safe environment, swimming with my neighbors, and the sound of families having fun and participating in a safe and healthy activity in a community setting. My fellow board members and I have tried very hard to please the membership and meet all the requirements of the state and federal government. I think 2012 swim season has proved to be successful in those goals.

I encourage members to volunteer for Northview Board, learn more about pool operations, and help maintain this important neighborhood asset.

Swim ON!

Kellie Jenkins

Northview Swim Club President 2012

Treasurer URGENTLY Needed

The Swim Club is without a treasurer and urgently needs a member to volunteer to take over those duties. Please call the President, Kellie Jenkins at 375-9070 and volunteer for this position.

Pool Board Nominations Being Accepted

Three positions on the pool board need to be filled for the 2013-2014 swim seasons. Each board member serves a two year term. In addition to a treasurer to complete the term of Roger Mann who has resigned, three positions are open. The positions and description of duties as outlined in the 2012 Northview Swim Club Membership Handbook are listed below.

President Elect - The President-elect shall assume the responsibilities of the President in his/her absence or incapacitation and be responsible for pool opening and closing in accordance with the schedule approved by the Board of Directors. The President-elect will assist pool managers to assure appropriate pool maintenance and operation throughout the pool season.

Secretary - The secretary shall be responsible for maintaining the records of the Club; preparing and distributing minutes of meetings of the Board of Directors and of the Membership; maintaining an up to date roster of members; preparing and issuing membership certificates; correspondence of the Club, including preparation and distribution of notices of meetings and the Annual Letter of the President. The Secretary will, at the direction of the Treasurer, collect fees and dues from members and issue pool keys. The Secretary will assist the President with ballot preparation; publish the member’s handbook annually, and circulation of monthly electronic newsletters.

Jr. Pool Manager - The Pool Managers shall be responsible for pool maintenance and operations, and ensuring the safe operation of the pool, including hiring and scheduling of lifeguards, pool assistants, and other operating staff, as authorized by the Board of Directors; ensuring that the pool operations are conducted in full accord with applicable laws and regulations; performance or oversight of the performance of such activities as pool chlorination, maintaining proper pool temperature and water chemistry, and enforcement of pool rules and maintenance of signage and of the parking lot and grounds. Pool Managers will assist the President-elect with pool opening and closing as necessary. Specific duties will be assigned to each manager.

Pool Cleanliness and Sanitary Water Conditions

Several pool members discovered feces in the pool but did not immediately report it. It is very important that if an incident is discovered that all members immediate get out of the water and notify a manager. For your own health and safety and the safety of other members, the pool must be closed and the water shock treated to make it safe for swimming. Should you or a family member vomit or discover feces in the pool water, tell the lifeguard immediately. If a lifeguard is not on duty, contact a pool manager, Dave Holmberg, 460-1760 or Ryan Fox, 375-0117.

Member Feedback

The Pool Board encourages member involvement and feedback about pool rules, policies, and operation. The Pool Board consists of dues paying members who volunteer their time so that you and your family can enjoy the pool. Angry and threatening messages are unwarranted; please keep discourse civil.

End of the Season Hot Dog Roast & Potluck

Come join your friends and neighbors at a hot dog roast and potluck Saturday August 25th. The pool board will supply hot dots, buns, condiments, plates and utensils. Bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share. The potluck will run from 1:00-3:00 PM.

Auditors Needed

Earn a $75 work credit by volunteering to audit the Northview Swim Club books. Contact Kellie Jenkins at 375-9070 if you are interested.

Last Potluck of the Season –Don’t Miss it!
The final potluck of the swim season is scheduled for Friday September 3, 2010 at 6:30 pm. A lifeguard will be on duty for those wishing to swim. Bring a main dish and a side or dessert to share. The pool board will provide plates, utensils and water to drink. We hope to see you there!

Gate Must Be Closed and Latched
Members are reminded that the pool gate must be closed and latched at all times unless you are coming in or going out. You may not prop the gate open, even if you are making several trips back and forth to your car. Do not leave the gate unlatched because you are expecting guests or other family members.

Lifeguards are enforcing this rule and you should expect to be reminded of it if you fail to comply.

We must be proactive to prevent drowning, and we are legally compelled to do so by keeping the gate closed. Propping the gate or leaving it unlatched is a violation of federal regulations and one of the other neighborhood pools in Richland was closed down temporarily for this very issue.

The federal code is designed to keep all of us safe. Let's follow this regulation and keep the pool open for everyone to enjoy.

School Lifeguard Hours Begin Tuesday
Lifeguard hours will change beginning Tuesday August 31st. After school starts, lifeguard hours are as follows:
Monday- Thursday: 3:00- 5:00 PM; 6:30-9:00 PM

Sunday: 1:00-5:00 PM; 6:30-9:00 PM

Cold Showers
The bathroom plumbing is in need of repair. There won’t be any hot water in the bathrooms for the remainder of the 2010 swim season and the pool board expects to have it in good working order for next swim season.

Labor Day
The pool is open and lifeguards will be on duty regular summer hours over Labor Day weekend.
Saturday: 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon; 1:00-5:00 PM; 6:30-10:00 PM
Sunday: 1:00-5:00 PM; 6:30-9:00 PM

Last Potluck of the Season Scheduled
The final potluck of the swim season is scheduled for Friday September 3, 2010 at 6:30 pm. A lifeguard will be on duty for those wishing to swim. Bring a main dish and a side or dessert to share. The pool board will provide plates, utensils and water to drink. We hope to see you there!

Take Advantage of Lifeguard Hours
The swim club provides lifeguard hours every day of the week for the enjoyment of children, teens and families, including over nine hours on Friday and Saturday. Recreational swimmers must leave the pool area during lap swim. Parents and grandparents, please ask your recreational swimmers to leave the pool when lifeguard hours are over.

Lifeguard hours:
10:00AM – 12:00PM (Mon-Sat)
1:00PM – 5:00PM (Every Day)
6:30PM – 9:00PM (Sun-Thurs)
6:30PM – 10:00 PM (Fri-Sat)

Lap Swim Etiquette
Here are a few tips for lap swimmers so that everyone can enjoy the experience:

  • The diving board and slide are off limits during lap-swim. Come during lifeguard hours if you want to use these.
  • Enter the swimming lane at the shallow end.
  • Look for an open lane. Choose a lane that isn't occupied by another swimmer.
  • If all the lanes are full you can wait for a lane to open or ask another swimmer to share a lane.
  • If you decide to share a lane, let the other swimmer know that you want to share. Try to share a lane with someone who swims at about the same pace as you.
  • If you are sharing a lane, be aware of the other swimmer(s). Stop at the nearest end if someone needs to pass you.

Northview Swim Club has two lap swims scheduled each day during the swim season:
12:00 - 1:00 pm
5:00-6:30 pm

Northview Swim Club T-Shirts
If you are interest in purchasing a Northview Swim Club T shirt, please contact Kellie Jenkins at 375-9070. There will be a mock-up posted this week on the chalk board. We need a minimum of ten orders.

Swim Diapers Mandatory for Infants and Young Children
Just a reminder that infants and young children, up to five years of age, must wear swim diapers in the pool. The pool has some of these so if you forget to bring one for your child, please ask the lifeguard. Any fecal material in the pool requires the pool to close for cleaning and disinfection. For your safety, the safety of your child, and the safety of others; please do not permit small children to swim without a swim diaper.

April 26, 2009

Welcome to the 2009 swimming season at Northview Swim Club! For those who were unable to attend the Annual Meeting, the 2009 officers are:

President: Diane Turney (539-8386)
President Elect: Ardis Rukavina (375-4704)
Secretary: Karen Buxton (375-3140)
Treasurer: Angie Rhyne (375-4020)
Pool Manager: Michelle Smith (375-1320)
Jr. Pool Manager: Kellie Jenkins (375-9070)

Pool Opening Date – the Pool will open on Saturday May 23, 2009 at 1:00 PM.

Opening Potluck – we will hold our season opening potluck on Saturday, June 6th at 5:30 PM. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. The potlucks are a fun, relaxing way to meet fellow members.

Keys – we replace the gate locks each year. In an effort to conserve resources, we are requiring members to return last year’s pool keys or be accessed a $5.00 replacement fee. Keys will be distributed only to Members in good standing.
Keys are available for pickup at the pool on May 9th and 16th from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (noon), or on Saturday May 23rd from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Alternative arrangements to pick up keys may be made by contacting Karen Buxton.
When picking up keys, members will be asked to sign a new release form to update their membership.

Dues – this year’s dues are $325. The Board did not wish to raise dues; however, increased costs have made it necessary. The broken black irrigation pipe that runs underneath the parking lot must be repaired and we must install special grate covers and an automatic pump shut-off valve to comply with new federal regulations. The new grate covers and shut-off valve must be installed before the pool can be opened. With an aging pool, we will begin to see more items that require repair or replacement. We tried to make the budget as tight as we could yet cover the expenses. Please be aware that a change was made in the membership dues schedule for late fees. Membership dues must be paid by June 1, 2009 to avoid incurring a late fee.

Lifeguards and Pool Openers Wanted – Northview is currently hiring lifeguards and pool openers. Members and their families are encouraged to apply. Lifeguards must be 16 or older and pool openers 14 or older to be considered for positions.

Work Credits – opportunities exist for members in good standing to earn one $75.00 work credit. If you are interested, please contact Ardis Rukavina by May 1, 2009.

Member Handbooks – to save money and trees, members will receive a copy of the current membership handbook by e-mail. Members, who do not have email, may request a printed copy.

New Party Rules – parties will now require a $50 non-refundable fee to cover the cost associated with hiring a lifeguard. A refundable damage deposit of $100 is also required. The gazebo is available to use for all parties.

Memberships Available –there are 10 memberships available for purchase. If you know of a family on your street who may be interested in joining our pool, please contact Karen Buxton. Memberships will sell for $400, which includes this season’s dues.

Questions -- if you have any questions or concerns regarding the pool or suggestions for improving the pool operations, please feel free to contact any of the pool board officers.
